For a bug in the app, Settings › Feedback › Send feedback is the better route. It sends the same kind of message, with the app version and device model filled in. Your log is never attached, from there or from here. If you want to send data, export it and decide for yourself where it goes.
How the app works
What does the ring on Today show?
The ring is the whole day, with midnight at the top and noon at the bottom. Sleep and nursing are drawn as arcs at the times they happened, and bottles, diapers and doses as dots. The middle says whether the baby is asleep or awake, for how long and since when.
Planned naps and tonight's bedtime are drawn in outline, and once the log has enough feeds to go on, the next ones are drawn as hollow dots. A past day shows the plan made that morning beside what happened.
The card under the ring puts naps, bottle, nursing and diapers beside what is usual by this time of day over the last 7 days.
How does the nap plan work?
To begin with, the plan uses published wake windows and daytime sleep for your baby's age. With Premium and Plan naps from logged sleep on, once a few days are logged, it follows your baby's own rhythm instead: how long the baby really stays awake, and how long the naps really are.
Last night counts too. After a short night the day gets more nap time, and after a long one it gets less. You can set a usual bedtime and wake-up time when you edit the child, and the card always says what the plan is based on. Once a few nights are logged, it also says when the baby usually wakes up. That is a forecast from your log and never a target.
If you'd rather not see a plan, turn off Nap plan in Settings › Today screen.
Why doesn't the feed card give a schedule?
Babies feed on demand, so the card only carries the last week forward: about how often feeds have come, and around when the next one may be. Overnight feeds are given as a count, such as “usually 1 to 2”. Until the log has enough feeds to go on, the card isn't shown. To hide it, turn off Feed rhythm in Settings › Today screen.
How do medicine reminders work?
Reminders can follow the baby's wake-up and bedtime, so a late morning moves the day's doses later. The gap between doses is never made shorter than the one you set.
A medicine can also have an amount a day, such as 5 ml. Each dose counts down from it, and once the day's amount is reached, that day's reminders stop.
What is in the summary for a visit?
A PDF to bring to a check-up. The first page has daily sleep and feeds, wet and dirty diapers, the latest weight, length and head circumference, temperatures, which medicines were given on how many days, and the questions you noted for the visit. The second graphs the figures you choose, day by day.
It can also add a two-week sleep diary and a food diary, the kind a nurse or doctor may ask a parent to keep. The summary is part of Premium, and it is on the Baby tab under Summary for a visit.
My baby was born early
Edit the child, turn on Born early and enter the due date. For a birth three or more weeks early, the growth chart, the nap plan and the meal guidance then count age from the due date, and say so where they do. The correction stops at two years.
Does Nota say whether my baby's numbers are normal?
No. Nota won't tell you whether a temperature is normal or whether your baby sleeps enough. It shows what you logged and adds it up. For what the numbers mean, ask your nurse or pediatrician.
Sharing and sync
Can someone see the log without changing it?
Yes. When you share the log, Apple's sharing options let you choose for each person whether they can make changes or only view. Someone who can only view sees every entry, and the app gives them nothing to add or change.
The person I invited can't see anything
Sharing works between two different Apple Accounts on two devices. Both people need to be signed in to iCloud, and the person invited has to accept the invitation on their own phone. If they installed Nota Baby first, they can tap Joining someone else's log? on the app's first screen and then open the invitation.
If the invitation was accepted but nothing appears, open the app on both phones while they are online. The first sync can take a few minutes.
My entries aren't syncing
Open Settings › Sync, under Your log. It shows the iCloud account, when this phone last received and last sent changes, and, if something failed, the reason iCloud gave. When sync fails, a red iCloud icon also appears at the top of Today, and tapping it opens the same card.
The most common causes are being signed out of iCloud, iCloud Drive being off, or no iCloud storage left.
I don't get a notification when someone else logs a sleep
Check Settings › Sharing › Updates from others, and that notifications are allowed for Nota in the device's own Settings app. The app tells you when the baby falls asleep or wakes up. It never announces a feed. With Quiet during a sleep on, settling back to sleep in the middle of a night is left out as well.
The timer isn't on my Lock Screen when someone else starts a sleep
iOS lets an app start a Lock Screen timer only while it is open. Tap the notification that the baby went to sleep, and Nota opens and starts it.
Premium
I bought Premium but the app doesn't know
Open Settings › Premium, under Your log, and tap Restore purchases. Purchases are tied to the Apple Account that made them, or shared with its Apple family through Family Sharing, so make sure you are signed in with the same one. A lifetime purchase never expires; a subscription needs to be active.
Does everyone who shares the log need to buy it?
No. One purchase covers everyone in your Apple family through Family Sharing. Someone outside your Apple family, like a nanny, buys their own if they want Premium. Logging and sharing are free for everyone either way.
I want to cancel
Settings › Premium › Manage subscription opens Apple's own subscription settings. A subscription shared with you through Family Sharing is cancelled by the person who bought it.
Cancelling takes nothing away that you logged: every entry, the whole history, sharing, every reminder and export keep working as before. What stops is Premium itself: the nap plan from your baby's own sleep, Insights and Ask, the summary for a visit, and the Monday summary.
Your data
Can I get my data out?
Yes. Open Settings › Export and import, under Export and backup. Choose Spreadsheet for a CSV file or Backup for a JSON file, pick a range, and tap Export data. The backup is the only format Nota Baby can read back in.
The PDF for a check-up is on the Baby tab, under Summary for a visit. The same card in Settings has a link to it.
Where are the automatic backups?
In Nota Baby's folder in the Files app. Settings › Automatic backup, under Export and backup, is on to begin with and saves a backup file each day, keeping the last three for each child. Open in Files takes you to the folder. The files stay on the phone rather than in iCloud, so copy one elsewhere if you want it off the phone.
I lost my phone, or I'm setting up a new one
Sign in to the same Apple Account and your log syncs back down on its own. If you have a backup file instead, the app's first screen offers Restore from a backup, and so does Settings › Export and import.
Can I bring my log from another app?
Yes, from Baby Tracker, Huckleberry, Napper and Nara Baby. Export the log from that app as a file, then open Settings › Export and import and tap Import from another app. Before anything is added, Nota shows what will come across. Importing the same file twice doesn't add anything twice. Coming from Nara Baby? Here is what comes across and what doesn't.
Can appointments go in the family calendar?
Yes. In Settings › Calendar, pick a calendar for the child, and appointments go into it. Changes made in the calendar come back into the log too. With more than one child, One calendar for all children puts everyone in one calendar, and each event's title starts with the child's name, like “Alma: Vaccination”. If you add an event there yourself, start its title the same way, and Nota knows whose it is. If it can't tell, it asks.
On the phone
The widget's buttons need two taps
That is Avoid accidental taps. Sleep, Pause, Wake up and End feed arm on the first tap and say Tap again; the second tap does it. Feed, diaper and dose open the app either way. You can switch it off under Settings › Widgets & Lock Screen, in This device.
Can I log without opening the app?
Yes, with Siri, the Action button or an NFC tag. Nota Baby's actions are in the Shortcuts app: Start Sleep, Log a Bottle Feed, Log a Diaper Change, Log Medicine and more. On an iPhone with an Action button, open Settings › Action Button, choose Shortcut and pick one. For a tag by the changing table, open Shortcuts, go to Automation, add an NFC automation, scan the tag and choose Log a Diaper Change. Touching the phone to the tag then logs a diaper without opening the app.
How do I change the buttons on Today?
Open Settings › Today screen › Buttons on Today, under This device, or tap Edit under the plus menu on Today. Up to four are buttons under the ring, and the rest are in the plus menu. Each phone keeps its own choice.
Reporting something that looks wrong
If a figure looks wrong, the most useful thing you can send is what you expected, what the app showed, and roughly when the entries were logged. Screenshots help.
